Terry

Terry is a recruitable party member met in the first few moments of the game. His hints aid Brad throughout the beginning of the game, as well as provide many positive status effects in battle.

Background[]

Name: Terry Rupert Hintz

Fighting Art: Di Tang Quan

Past Occupation: Free Loader

Likes: Writing in his journal

Favorite Food: Pizza

Most Hated Thing: Being Alone

The Almighty Lord of Hints. Loved by countless fans. He didn't want all his fame to go to his head, so Terry left his fans in search of a more enriching life. This leads to him meeting Brad, and the events of The Painful.

Appearance and Personality[]

Terry-0

Terry is a man who wears a cheetah jersey and red sweatbands called "Hint Bands", he has beady eyes, a large nose, pink lips, and a shaven beard. Terry is a cowardly yet friendly man who likes to be with others and likes to write hints, which can be seen all around Olathe; most of them are useful, while some are jokes.

Story[]

LISA: The Painful[]

Terry Dog

Terry is first seen outside Brad's House, the first area in which the player is given control after one of Brad's Joy and alcohol binges. He finds Terry Hintz up a tree, fleeing from a harmless dog. He says that he has pulled a hamstring and is unable to fight. After Brad defeats the dog, Terry "sees" how lonely Brad looks and joins him on his journey, providing help and hints for the player.

If playing on LISA: Definitive Edition's version of LISA: The Painful, Terry will eventually offer the player the ability to activate "Painless mode" by offering them the Terry's Terroids item. The item will remain in the Key Items of the player's inventory until used.

Columbo Howdy

Upon waking up in Path to the Beginning after being hit by a truck, Brad and Terry wake up with the grown up boys from the Neighborhood overlooking them. Columbo notes that their paths are crossing again and how they spent their time as lads. Columbo gives Brad an ultimatum: lose all of his belongings or surrender Terry to him. If Brad surrenders Terry, he is removed from the party permanently, and returns in the form of an enemy as Former Friend.

LISA: The Joyful[]

He has built several houses in an area, along with several straw statues of himself. There are hint posters everywhere, ranging from how to respect him, to having to bow before king Terry, to dealing with depression, eventually devolving into tear-stained scribbles. At the end of his hint trail is Terry's throne, his painting of himself, and a chest containing the Hint Mask. Buddy can equip the mask, which functions like the other masks.

It is presumed that his depression is what made him leave the area to find a companion, which caused him to get stuck in a tree; only to be later saved by Brad at the beginning of The Painful.

Battle[]

Terry starts off extremely weak, his basic attacks almost always dealing zero damage. His only starting ability is Little Cheer, a very powerless move that, while can be used outside of battle, only restores about 5% of the target's HP. As he levels up he gets more useful skills, but the majority of them have equivalents usable by much better allies.

Terry is the only ally to have Cool Pose abilities, granting him the Cool status and enabling HP/SP regeneration after every turn. If leveled up to 25, Terry learns The Hottest Dance, a fire based attack that deals ridiculous damage even on its own. It is arguably the most powerful ally attack in the entire game. This move alone makes Terry a vastly more useful party member. However, his HP will still be low despite gaining so many levels. He is essentially a glass cannon.

Hints[]

  • If coupled with Birdie Hall's Gasoline Spit, Terry's Hottest Dance can deal devastating amounts of damage to a single enemy.
  • Terry is statistically the weakest party member in the game. Please use with care.

Trivia[]

  • Terry appeared in the Kickstarter demo, but as an NPC.
  • Terry is one of 4 characters that Brad needs to add to his party in order to progress, the other 3 being Percy, Fardy, and Buffalo.
  • Terry's Land of Hints in The Joyful was planned from the start. [1]
  • It is also revealed in Terry's Land of Hints that he suffers from serious depression. However, he doesn't have the Status Effect, like Fardy or Ollie. Likely a gameplay choice, given how depression lowers the character's ATK, DEF and AGI, and Terry already has low stats or because he is no longer alone.
  • In the Kickstarter demo of LISA: THE PAINFUL RPG, Terry Hintz actually commits suicide the second time you encounter him in the game. At the first encounter, he will ask you to leave. [2]
  • According to Dingaling, Terry was designed to be as "unlikable/unusable" as possible so the player would have a character they could sacrifice the easiest. After the games release he said that idea backfired.
  • In a Lisa headcanons blog, Dingaling himself came forth with his own "head"canon about Terry's past. Apparently, Terry had a severe sickness as a child and was always lonely as even back then, he had nobody to support him through it. Because of this, Terry had to be his own biggest cheerleader which actually helped him beat his illness and is what made him the cheerleader of a man he is today. Terry Hintz isn't even his real name, it's a given that many characters have made up names because of how goofy they are, but not even Terry's first name is his actual first name apparently. All of this information was randomly dumped onto a Lisa headcanons blog so it's rather dubious how much this can really be taken as truth as it's not inside the game nor is it easy to access. Take it as you will whether it sounds fitting enough or adds to the story and characters.
